Both houses of Congress will make key votes on national health reform legislation in the next few weeks. In the House or Representatives, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has the final say on what will be included in the legislation voted on by the House so it is absolutely critical for her to stand up for children because under the House bill as currently written, some children could be worse off.  Children also need champions to support amendments to improve children’s health coverage in the Senate bill as it is debated on the Senate floor —both Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) have an important role to play in speaking up and supporting amendments that ensure children are better – not worse – off after health care reform passes.

The California budget crisis made it clear that strong national health reform is needed NOW to help ensure that children in struggling states like California have access to comprehensive, affordable, health coverage.  Children and families throughout California were put in harm’s way by state budget cuts that would have dropped or denied health coverage for more than a million children. This is a risk that California children and families will face again in 2010 and until national health reform ends the lottery of geography and guarantees all children access to health coverage  that is affordable, comprehensive, and simple to get and keep.
